Although the boat may have been built in the Mississippi Delta in the early 1990s, the Detroit Princess has been well received from day one. When researching the options to bring a boat-style restaurant to Detroit, we really wanted to provide something that Detroit that had been missing since the late 1980s. Claire and SS Columbia entertained Detroiters on the river, but they sadly were sold in 1991. Until the Detroit Princess Riverboat’s arrival in 2005 the riverfront felt a tad bit empty, and we have happily filled the role as Detroit’s premier riverboat experience ever since. The Detroit Princess Riverboat boasts an impressive 30,000 square feet of dining and event space. It stretches 222 feet in length, spans 62 feet in width, reaches a towering height of 88 feet, and weighs a substantial 1,430 tons.
Built in 1993 in Louisiana, this majestic vessel boasts a fascinating past as a floating casino known as the "Players Riverboat Casino II." In 2004, the boat embarked on a remarkable voyage to its new home in Detroit. Due to its size, navigating the Mississippi River was impossible, requiring it to be towed around Florida, through the inter-coastal waterway, and across the St. Lawrence Seaway to reach the Great Lakes. After a transformative overhaul, the boat was rechristened as the Detroit Princess Riverboat, heralding a new era of elegance and entertainment on the Detroit River. Harrah’s Hotel & Casinos eventually purchased the boat, bringing it back down south to Lake Charles, Louisiana where it ran as a casino boat for a number of years before being stripped of all its gambling decor and abandoned for a larger boat. The owners had plans to scrap the boat, but at the final hour some folks up north decided to step in. From couples taking "Titanic" style flying photos, to the riders dancing to Motown music, the audience is as diverse as they come, and there is an overall cheerful vibe in the air.
